MISSION: Jack and Jill of America, Inc., is a membership organization of mothers with children ages 2 – 19, dedicated to nurturing future African American leaders by strengthening children through leadership development, volunteer service, philanthropic giving and civic duty.

Jack and Jill boasts 252 chapters nationwide, representing more than 40,000 family members. Each chapter plans annual programming activities guided under a general five point programmatic thrust: cultural awareness, educational development, health (education and advocacy), civic (legislative advocacy and service) and social/recreational areas. Through service projects, Jack and Jill of America creates a medium of contact for children to stimulate their growth and development. Through lobbying, educational programming, dissemination of education materials, and the organization of community and charitable events, Jack and Jill has promoted the public awareness and interests of children including child development, child growth, child quality of life, child care and the promotion of children’s rights.

About US

Oakland Bay Area Chapter

The Oakland Bay Area Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. was organized in 1955 by 25 interested chapter members who served as sponsors for the new group.  Ruth Howard, National Treasurer, presented the charter at the national convention.  Winifred Younge had the distinction of serving as the first President from 1955-1957. The Oakland Bay Area Chapter of Jack & Jill of America, Inc. is comprised of mothers who live in the Greater Oakland Bay Area including the cities of Berkeley, Hayward, Oakland, Piedmont, and San Leandro.

Since 1955 the Oakland Bay Area Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc has been a supportive community for Black children and their families in the Oakland Bay Area. We have a long legacy working to advance the mission of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. — nurturing future leaders through philanthropic, educational, leadership development, and civic duty programming.

Our members are diligent about creating a safe space for our children to learn, grow, and play while also contributing and being active members of the community where we live. Today, our Oakland Bay Area Chapter has 90 plus family members, led by our fabulous mother members who work diligently to ensure our children have the experiences, skills, and knowledge to be their best selves and contributing citizens during their time in Jack and Jill and when they graduate.

As a chapter, we embody the idea that it takes a village to raise our children. On behalf of myself and the executive board, we welcome you to explore our site and learn more about our beloved chapter and Jack and Jill community.

Long live Jack and Jill,
